The soil is its own ecosystem. It has bacteria, fungi, protozoa, earthworms, which all support the ecosystem in their own way. For example, earthworm casts (soil the goes through the earthworms gut) are 6 times higher in plant available nutrients than regular soil. 

Over the past half century, agriculture has become more dependent on synthetic solutions to soil health deficiency, which further advances the soil heath problems.
